NEW REVIEWS & COMMENTS FOR "TRANSCEND"

Musical Discoveries

http://www.musicaldiscoveries.com/digest/digest.php?a=viewr&id=800top

(17 August 2008) Three years after their debut album In The Wake (review and interview), the Canadian progressive rock band Dream Aria return with a full length second album entitled Transcend. Dream Aria is fronted by stunning lead vocalist Ann Burstyn (also harmonies, lyrics, vocal melodies). The band lineup is completed by Donald Stagg (composer, lyrics, keyboards, arranger), Garry Flint (producer, drums, engineer), Jon Casselman (bass). Guest musicians featured on the new album include Steve Agelakos (guitars), Tim Welch (guitars), Kurt Schefter (guitars), Jozef Pilasanovic (guitars), Lonnie Glass (bass) and Alberto Suarez (congas). Transcend is comprised of eleven tracks, short by progressive rock standards, most running under the 5:00 minute mark. It leads us to say that this album takes the band into straight rock territory. But that said, the significant diversity of the themes written into the album doesn't take away from Dream Aria's solid progressive rock roots. The rhythmic and symphonic and worldly style of the title track clearly demonstrates the band's well honed instrumental chops and Ann's powerfully soaring vocal style. Offset by Steve Agelakos' ripping guitar solos, Ann's vocal harmonies are simplly chilling. The rhythm guitar and equally thick rocking instrumental arrangement of "The Rhythm of Now" immediately demonstrate the growth of Dream Aria since In The Wake. Ann's immediately recognizable soaring lead and vocal harmonies, ripping guitar solos and Wakemanesque keyboard passages illlustrate the strength of the Canadian outfit. The fast-paced "Labyrinth" further develops the album's theme. Much care was taken to mix Ann's voice above the vast instrumental arrangement. A quiet instrumental bridge provides a perfect backdrop for each musician to demonstrate their virtuousity. Released earlier as a single in the run up to Transcend, "Serpent Nile" is a radio friendly and memorable rocker. Rich with instrumental bridges, and full of lovely vocal harmonies Ann's remarkable range shines through the number. Fueled by instrumental thunder, we were especially pleased with the mix of Ann's soaring vocals in the powerful rocker "Pandora's Box." Contrasted by the keyboard laced ballad "Rebecca," is the highly memorable metal-edged guitar rocker entitled "Tigress." Keyboard washes add great texture in the choruses. Onward to another album standout, "Secret." Listen for the Chris Squire bass line and Steve Howe electric styled guitar lead and the fast paced 90210 Yes inspired arrangement underneath Ann's lush vocal harmonies. A dramatic tempo change in the keyboard instrumental bridge provides a dramatic contrast before the song concludes. Released as a single earlier, Ann's vocal prowess shines right through instrumentals in the lovely new age/rock crossover entitle "Compassion." The addition of acoustic percussion to the mix works extremely well with light guitar work, soft keyboard textures and the finely produced vocal layering. Dream Aria's album concludes with their own rocking rendition of the classic "Flower Duet." The late 1990s British Airways theme, sung and layered beautifully and well played, replete with powerful guitars, this arrangement will draw attention from a very broad audience. Perhaps better suited to the territory of a bonus track, we would have preferred another original Dream Aria song to conclude the album. We were also surprised that the band's gorgeous 2007 single "Anne Bonny," recorded for the forthcoming various artists compilation Pirate's Tales was omitted from Transcend. Transcend is a superb follow up to the band's debut. Order the CD today via the band's website. The band remains clearly grounded in progressive rock and may therefore leave some hard core listeners wanting longer arrangements chilled. That said, Dream Aria are amongst a rare bred of bands (like Britain's Magenta) producing quality female fronted progressive rock music. Bravo!

Review for Transcend (by Susan Frances) has been posted at Absolutepunk.net and can be found here: http://www.absolutepunk.net/showthread.php?t=478871

The Canadian quartet Dream Aria has a name that alone completely expresses what their music is like, as the band gives birth to melodies with gorgeous symphonic dreamscapes able to lift the listener to an ethereal plane on their latest release, Transcend. There is a definite rock edge and progressive thinking in the band’s second album, Transcend, following their debut offering, In The Wake. The queenly voicing in lead singer Ann Burstyn’s register is relatable to Evanescence’s Amy Lee, and the aerial keyboards and dazzling displays performed by Don Stagg is reminiscent of Russian Circles. The rhythm section of drummer Garry Flint and bassist Jon Casselman cue up the pins with the precision of prog rock masters Dream Theater. Produced by Flint, Transcend has an electro-pop/ambient shimmer and symphonic rock pitch that moves to the rhythm of the world music market. The sprinting keys of “Labyrinth” complement the astro-glides of the guitar cuts played by Kurt Schefter, culminating to spectacular peaks. The church organ resonance of the keyboards in “The Rhythm of Now” tangles around the melodic columns of Tim Welch’s sinewy guitar lines. All of the guitar parts of the album are played by special guests who include Schefter, Welch, Steve Agelakos, and Jozef Pilasanovic. Other special guests on the album include bassist Lonnie Glass and conga player Alberto Suarez who, together with Pilasanovic, make the melodically enriched “Compassion” a track with mega-force gusts and scintillating tones that penetrate into the listener’s skin. Burstyn’s lyrics for “Compassion” enhance the penetration with words that soak into the music. “On a new day, with no more pain or hate / All connected, souls intertwined, we are one beneath the sun, moon and stars.” Burstyn’s words show genuineness in beauty, and also how beauty can be deceiving like in “Tigress” when the resonance in her voice reaches a siren’s bellow, “Angelic face that haunts your sleep / Her soul in all your dreams / A price that you’ll pay on and on / Takes you to Heaven in euphoria / Her scent and voice will make you weak / Forever at your feet.” The theatrical inflections in Burstyn’s voice give the songs a greater dimension, and the subtle touches like a toy chest music box peeking through the melodic lines of “Pandora’s Box” and exotic Middle Eastern accents sprinkled across “Serpent Nile” strengthen the songs character. Transcend is an album that leaves an indelible mark on its listener. There is so much in the album that makes it feel like the soundtrack to your life, whether the songs are somehow able to describe the turning points in your life or connect with emotions that you have experienced, the songs offer encouragement to keep a positive outlook about the future. It is an album that takes many artists a life-time to make, but it is really nice that Dream Aria can make this kind of album now.

Classic Rock Society
I have been fortunate enough to follow the progress of this album over the last few months of its production and as the final mixes of each track arrived I could only be increasingly impressed as the Canadian outfit brought it all together. Fronted by the dynamic voice of the lovely Ann Burstyn the overall impression was of a band of experienced musicians with a love of progressive music but, intentionally or not, having a 21st century sound nearer to Evanescence than Within Temptation. This is no heavy rock album, more melodic rock with a classical and dramatical impression with dark corners and the odd ethnic approach. Great guitar and keyboards make it a prog-rock essential. The album ends with a beautiful version of Delibes Flower Duet, ideal for Burstyn's voice. This will go in end of Sept magazine of Classic Rock Society

Ultimate Guitar Review
Sound: Mystically, exotic electro-pop runs through the veins of Dream Aria's sophomore album, Transcend. The keyboard figments created by Don Stagg have an iridescent glow liken to Pink Floyd, and the sinuous movements of the guitar patterns act as a stimulant causing the melodies to soar and produce gaping holes of wondrous chord entanglements. Dream Aria does not have a permanent guitarist so special guests were asked to record guitar parts, one guitarist was used for each track. Some of the guitarists whom the band employed for the album are Steve Agelakos, Tim Welch, Kurt Schefter, and Jozef Pilasanovic. Each guitarist offers uniquely twined thickets and bulging spires that give the songs they contributed to, a special sonic vibration, although without lead vocalist Ann Burstyn's voice projecting such heated emotion into the songs, the album would be an ambient sea of notes that meander aimlessly. Burstyn's glistening vocal chords and inflections share a likeness to Sarah Brighman. Her vocal melodies float over the rhythmic swells of bassist Jon Casselman and drummer Garry Flint like sheets of satin. She digs in deep into the emotional pit of being tricked through 'Tigress, ' and smoothes out her vocals along the melodic atmospherics of 'The Secret.' The guitar patterns of Pilasanovic along 'Compassion' induce a sexy, nocturnal shading through the melody, while the angelic resonance in the melodic flourishes of 'Flower Duet, ' which is the only track not written by Dream Aria but by Leo Delibes, is reminiscent of a Jim Steinman production using larger than life chord projections, sleek ridges and shooting chord trajectories. It is a track that is befitting for an ambient-pop album and transcends archetypical staples of rock music. // 9

Lyrics and Singing: The lyrics grab impressions from the emotional ethers like in 'Compassion' when Burstyn purrs, 'Compassion, serenity awaits / Sleep now, the most blissful of dreams unfold, drift amidst the pure cleansing waves / Flowing ever peacefully.' Burstyn's voice is so hypnotic that you believe every word that slips from her lips. The verses have healing and therapeutic powers, offering a healthy, New Age approach to living. In this way, the lyrics which Ann Burstyn writes are reflections of leading a clean lifestyle, as her words in 'Tigress' signpost warnings about falling under the spell of deception, 'Danger, captured, surrender to her will / Breathless, rapture until she gets her fill / Restless, tigress, relinquish to the thrill / Healing you with her golden touch / Offering all that you've missed so much.' // 8

Impression: Dream Aria's album, Transcend shows many similarities to their debut album, In The Wake, but it also widens the group's breadth of ambient patinas and epic rock principles. Each song is like it's own mini-masterpiece implanting epic sounding instrumentation and vocals that bring together emo and operatic intonations. The biggest complaint critics have made about Dream Aria's music is that they cannot decide which track they want to listen to more, and that hardly makes Transcend a disappointing CD. It's nice to know that you can buy an album and enjoy every single song. That was once the motivation which drove artists to make albums, and maybe Dream Aria is old-fashioned in this way, but it is the kind of old-fashioned quality that is a good thing to have in their music. // 9

Hiya, I loved your music-such variety!! It is a blend- and so well done . Unlike so many other bands, you are not guilty of mindless repetition (thank God!). The dreamy feel of your music and the vocals are great! I also like the mixture of different world styles. I really should stop now before I embarass myself by gushing too much. By the by I like the two "In the wake" songs. They compliment each other perfectly! Well, this is a start! I've never emailed anyone from Canada before. I'm from Northern Ireland, near Belfast. I'm going to have to bookmark your site now!! Have you ever been to the UK to play? Laura

I'd love to do an interview with you, Don and the other guys in Dream Aria -- nothing formal -- just a few folks talking about music, a band and life.  OH MY GOD! Ann Burstyn! How the hell are you?! What a voice you have...can you ever sing girl! Damn! Jay Bodner of Eagle & Hawk band

Ann you have a hauntingly, beautiful voice. After listening to the CD a few times now (and changing favorties a couple of times) I think I can honestly say the first song to go on is Raindrops, unless either of you have any objections. I don't know what it is about that song, but it just got to me. They all got to me, but that one, for now....I can't stop listening to it! Feel free to e-mail me anytime. As I've told Don, you can locate the show on the internet on www.cyberstationusa.com. Just click ON AIR and then PLAY. You may have to download their media player but it's free and quick. I strongly suggested he tune in next Tuesday @ 8:00 pm EST as that is when Dream Aria will be debuting. I don't know if you've been on air before or not, so I'll t ry to do justice to the beauty of the art, but I just really never know wht's going to come out of my mouth........ ;) All my best, Evie G, The Trigger Hippie

Hello Ann. May I please introduce myself (I picked up on your melodicrock.com posting and have looked at the your own and Dream Aria's web sites.  The band and its music sounds very interesting.  As you will see, I write for various magazines here in Britain, but prodominantly FIREWORKS (see links on Melodicrock.com) and which appears approximately bi-monthly.  My contributions for the next edition (February/March 2005) are being completed today for passing to the Editor . However, if you would like to consider myself as the person to entrust with reviewing 'In The Wake' for publication in the following edition of the magazine, then I would be pleased to attempt this. You should send any promotional material and a copy of the CD to my UK address as on the card shown on the attached document. It is, of course, possible that the magazine could publish an article about Dream Aria in the same edition of the magazine - though this is not something that I am personally in a position to promise to you. Let's take one step at a time. If you would like to ask me any questions about this, or about my writings, please do not hesitate to contact me. In any case I would welcome a reply to this email, Ann, so that I can continue to plan my assignments for the next issue of Fireworks accordingly. Meanwhile, I must go and complete the writing of my final CD review for the next issue ("All the Sinners" by Forgotten Tales - a Canadian band of whom you may have heard?) With all best wishes, Paul Jerome Smith.

DREAM ARIA - a band with "Promise"
These are probably the best lyrics of the songs I have heard from Dream Aria.

The band is very strong - as always.
Every track is supremely professional, and the vocals are out of this world.

Tight production work here as well.

Soulful
A well wrought ballad number sure to hit where the heart is. Vocals and vocal harmonies are honest and rich, while piano rhythms drive the song and almost bluesy guitars peak the emotion.
